Just the facts: An Art Installation

What: An installation of over 50 iron trees in the downtown London core. They are all painted in one of six colours, the three primary (red, blue, yellow) or three secondary (orange, green, purple). They are 14-18 feet high.  On the south side of Dundas St, half a block East of Colborne is Shining Brightly, a trunk carving made in partnership with St. Leonard's Community Services,
 it stands on the north side of the building housing their headquarters.
 The title of the sculpture reads prominently down the front.

on the corner of Talbot St and  King St. The red tree in the foreground of

It is with a bit of sorrow that I write this post. After seeing this article in the London Free Press, I was able to confirm that several of the carvings have been designated for removal, as they have been deemed unsafe. The following carvings are either already gone, or will be removed soon, according to Tourism London.

If you are visiting London from outside of the city, there is a good chance that one of your first stops after leaving Highway 401 will be the London Tourism Visitors Centre.

The Pearson Panther is located in the front yard of Lester B. Pearson School for the Arts. This carving is a stop on the original leg of Tourism London's Tree Trunk Tour. It is similar to The Learning Tree, and the CCH Crusader, as they are all located on school properties. While the other two carvings are at a secondary school, Pearson is an elementary school.

The Full Circle Group Benefits' sponsored carving 'Moosehead' is located at 834 Van St. just a half a block east of Rectory in London. The carving is a little different than most of the others on London's Tree Trunk Tour. It isn't on a main street, or associated with a large institution. It was completed as a part of the partnership that created the other fifteen works on the tour.

It is a visually dense creation, converting an old tree trunk into a nostalgic trip back to all of the most familiar elements of primary and secondary school.

Located at 326 Queens Av., west of Waterloo St. is the tree trunk carving 'Mother Nature'. Edit: It has come to my attention that this carving has been re-located to the London Tourism grounds on Wellington Road South. I suspect this was due to safety concerns about the integrity of the base. The London Tourism website tells us that the carving was done by Neil Cox. Located at 462 Springbank Drive, east of Wonderland Rd, and west of Kernohan Parkway, is 'Springbank', another of the 15 stops on Tourism London's Tree Trunk Tour. It is located off the corner of the parking lot of the Springbank Garden Center.  Though it is not a large or overly ambitious sculpture, it is notable for being the extreme westernmost carving on the Tree Trunk Tour.

On the south side of Dundas St, East of the end on King St. is 'Western Fair' a large and complex carving that is an official stop on London's Tree Trunk Tour. The sculpture is a trunk that was carved on site, in Queens Park, which is on the northmost edge of the Western Fair District, an entertainment zone located east of the downtown core in London.

"Woodfield" is a carving located  at 581 William St. in downtown London. It is near the west end of Rosedale Av. The sculpture commemorates the neighbourhood known as Woodfield, which covers most of the east side of the downtown core. If you are wondering, perhaps, where the London Tree Trunk Tour began, I would likely direct you to Peter St. in downtown London. Peter St. is a short side street, perhaps 200 meters long, and it is the home to the Robbin Wenzoski sculpture entitled "Convergence".

At the corner of King St and Waterloo St, stands 'Donohue's Canadiana' a large and complex entry on London's Tree Trunk Tour. It is located at the edge of the parking lot of the Donohue Funeral Home. This is, in my opinion, one of the finest examples of what can be achieved in the chainsaw carving art form. The CCH Crusader carving is located at the corner of Dundas St. and Colborne St. in downtown London. It is located on the southwest corner of the Catholic Central High School property, directly in front of the school's billboard. CCH is the oldest secondary school in the Thames Valley Catholic School Board system.

The school mascot is, obviously, the Crusader.

On the east side of Maitland St, about 20 metres south of Queens Ave, is the tree trunk carving entitled "Rising Up on Eagle's Wings". The carving is located at the side of a house owned by Mission Services London.
